5 reasons you don't need a jet wash to clean your car properly

By The Detailing Team

August 2026

And why the £400 setup in your neighbour's garage is quietly ruining his paint.

Nobody ever actually showed you how to do this

Most people think a proper wash needs a pressure washer, a foam lance and half a Saturday. It doesn't. It needs the right chemistry and about ten minutes.

You learned it from your dad, or from a bloke at a car wash, or you just worked it out. Bucket, sponge, washing up liquid if you were desperate. It got the dirt off and it looked alright when it was wet.

Then you saw the swirls in the sun and assumed you needed better kit.

You don't. You need a different order of operations. Here's why.

REASON 1

Pressure doesn't lift dirt. Chemistry does.

A jet wash blasts water at loose grit. It moves it about. What actually lifts bonded dirt off paint is dwell time - a pre-wash sitting on the panel breaking the bond so it can be rinsed away.

That's chemistry, not pressure. A garden hose rinses just as well once the chemistry has done its job.

This is why professional detailers spend more on product than they do on machines.

Foam + dwell time

REASON 2

£300, plus a hose reel, plus somewhere to store it

A decent pressure washer is £250 to £400. Then a foam lance, then the right connector for your tap, then somewhere in the garage it can live.

If you're on a terrace, in a flat, or parked on the street, none of that works anyway. No outside tap, no plug socket, nowhere to coil forty feet of hose.

Two sprayers and a garden hose fit in a cupboard.

REASON 3

Thick snow foam from a garden hose. Here's the actual method.

Three steps. Ten minutes. Your hands don't touch the paint until the car is already clean.

1

2 MINUTES

Pre-wash

Spray the whole car with pre-wash. Leave it. This is the step everyone skips and it's the one that does the work. It breaks the bond between the grime and your paint.

2

3 MINUTES

Snow foam

Second sprayer, snow foam over the top. Thick, clinging, no jet wash required. Let it run down the panels and take the loosened dirt with it.

3

5 MINUTES

Rinse and READY

Garden hose, top down. Quick contact clean. Then the drying towel. That's it. Nothing abrasive has touched the paint at any point.

REASON 4

It's the sponge that's scratching your paint, not the water

Every swirl mark on your car was put there by something touching it. A mitt that's picked up grit. A brush at a hand car wash that's been on forty cars that day. A sponge that dropped on the drive and got rinsed off.

Pressure washing doesn't cause swirls. Contact does. And contact is unavoidable if the dirt is still on the paint when you start touching it.

Pre-wash first and the car is already clean before anything makes contact.

Worth knowing: swirl marks are what knocks money off at part exchange. A respray on one panel is £400 to £600.

REASON 5

Seven products. Not £400 of machinery.

Pre-wash. Snow foam. Shampoo. Detail spray. Spray bottle. Drying towel, Mitt. Everything the three steps need, in one box.

Bought separately it's £120. As the Essential Kit it's £69.99.

No machine. No lance. No storage problem.
